Vincent's bedroom in the Yellow House in Arles (1898)

When first observing the painting you will notice that the bright colour scale almost jumps off the frame. Not only is this due to the extensive variety of colours used but also because complimentary colours such as blue and orange or green and reed are painted closely together which strenghtens each individual colour. It was Van Gogh's aim to create a sense of tranquility, a kind of tranquility that only can only be found in a bedroom.

The painting is Van Gogh's bedroom in the yellow house in Arles. The paitings on the wall are that of van Gogh of the soldier Paul-Eugene Milliet and the poet Eugene Boch whom Van Gogh wrote often about in his letters to his brother Theo. One would most probably wonder why there are some details in the painting that do not make sense: the wall with the window looks to be slanted. In reality the wall was indeed so.

The house was destroyed during the second world war but will always remain thanks to the art of Vincent van Gogh.
